Important: NAPLEX is one component of pharmacist licensure. State-board requirements must also be satisfied.
01 — Understanding the US Pathway

NAPLEX Is an Exam. US Licensure Is a Pathway.

The NAPLEX assesses entry-level pharmacist knowledge and skills, but passing NAPLEX alone does not automatically create a pharmacist licence. The candidate must satisfy the requirements of the state board of pharmacy in the jurisdiction where licensure is sought.

DOMESTIC GRADUATES

U.S. Pharmacy Graduate Route

  • Graduate from a qualifying pharmacy program.
  • Meet state-board eligibility requirements.
  • Complete NAPLEX preparation.
  • Complete jurisprudence examination requirements where applicable.
  • Complete other state-specific licensure requirements.
FOREIGN GRADUATES

International Pharmacist Route

  • Determine whether the foreign-graduate pathway applies.
  • Complete FPGEC requirements.
  • Meet current communication / English requirements.
  • Pass FPGEE and obtain FPGEC Certification.
  • Then proceed into the relevant state-board licensure pathway.

State-specific principle: NABP administers the NAPLEX, while state boards determine jurisdiction-specific eligibility and licensure requirements. Some jurisdictions use MPJE, while participating jurisdictions may use UMPJE or another jurisprudence examination structure.
03 — International Pharmacists

For Indian & International Pharmacy Graduates

For a foreign pharmacy graduate, NAPLEX is generally not the administrative starting point. The FPGEC pathway determines when the candidate can proceed into the U.S. pharmacist licensure process.

🎓

Pharmacy Education

Determine whether your foreign pharmacy qualification meets the current FPGEC education requirements.

🌎

Credential Evaluation

Submit the required education documents for evaluation through the process designated by NABP.

🗣️

Communication Requirement

Meet the communication / English requirement applicable to the FPGEC pathway.

📝

FPGEE

Complete the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination after receiving eligibility.

✅

FPGEC Certification

Complete the required certification pathway before moving into the U.S. state licensure stage.

🇺🇸

State Licensure

Choose the jurisdiction where you seek licensure and review its specific NAPLEX and jurisprudence requirements.

04 — FPGEC Certification

What Is FPGEC?

FPGEC stands for Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee Certification. It is the NABP certification pathway for foreign pharmacy graduates seeking to enter the applicable U.S. pharmacist licensure process.

Core FPGEC Components

  • Foreign pharmacy education review.
  • Credential evaluation.
  • Communication / English requirement.
  • FPGEE eligibility and examination.
  • Successful completion of the certification requirements.

What FPGEC Does Not Mean

  • It is not itself a state pharmacist licence.
  • It does not eliminate state-board requirements.
  • It does not replace NAPLEX where the state requires NAPLEX.
  • It does not automatically authorize pharmacy practice.
  • It does not make every state’s licensure process identical.
NABP states that foreign pharmacy graduates must achieve FPGEC Certification before applying for state pharmacist licensure examinations such as NAPLEX, MPJE or UMPJE in the applicable pathway.
05 — FPGEE

FPGEE — Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination

FPGEE assesses the pharmacy knowledge of foreign pharmacy graduates as part of the FPGEC certification pathway.

What FPGEE Covers

  • Biomedical sciences
  • Pharmaceutical sciences
  • Behavioral sciences
  • Clinical sciences
  • Integrated pharmacy knowledge

FPGEE Preparation Strategy

  • Refresh foundational pharmacy sciences.

06 — Application Readiness

Prepare Your FPGEC Documentation Carefully

Administrative errors can delay international credential processing. Candidates should follow the current NABP Candidate Application Bulletin and documentation instructions.

Education Documents

Official pharmacy-school records and proof of degree as required by the current credential-evaluation process.

Licensure / Registration

Submit evidence of pharmacy licensure and/or registration as required for the candidate’s country and circumstances.

Identity Documents

Follow NABP instructions for acceptable identification and required certification/notarization.

Translations

Documents that are not in English require the appropriate official translation process.

Credential Evaluation

Education credentials are evaluated through the organization specified by NABP for the FPGEC process.

Status Tracking

Monitor the status of the application and submitted documentation through the applicable NABP system.

Do not rely on old checklists. NABP requirements and administrative procedures can change. Use the current FPGEC Candidate Application Bulletin.
07 — Eligibility

Who Needs the FPGEC Pathway?

FOREIGN PHARMACY GRADUATES

Internationally Educated Pharmacists

Graduates of qualifying pharmacy programs outside the United States may need FPGEC Certification before becoming eligible for the relevant U.S. pharmacist licensure exams.

U.S. PHARMACY GRADUATES

Domestic Pharmacy Graduates

Graduates of qualifying U.S. pharmacy programs generally enter the licensure pathway through the requirements established by the relevant state board and NABP.

The exact eligibility route depends on the candidate’s educational background, jurisdiction and current state-board requirements.
08 — NAPLEX

Current NAPLEX Examination Format

225 Total questions
6 Hours Examination duration
Fixed Form Computerized delivery
Pass / Fail Reported result
NABP currently states that candidates have five total attempts to pass NAPLEX. A maximum of three attempts applies within a 12-month period. Always verify the current Candidate Application Bulletin and applicable jurisdiction requirements.

What is NAPLEX?

NAPLEX is the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination administered by NABP to help boards assess entry-level pharmacist knowledge and skills.

Is NAPLEX enough to become a pharmacist in the USA?

No. NAPLEX is one component of pharmacist licensure. Candidates must satisfy the applicable state-board requirements and any required jurisprudence or other licensure requirements.

Who needs FPGEC Certification?

Foreign pharmacy graduates who fall within the applicable NABP foreign-graduate pathway generally need FPGEC Certification before progressing to the relevant state pharmacist licensure examinations.

What is FPGEE?

FPGEE is the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination and forms part of the FPGEC certification pathway for eligible foreign pharmacy graduates.

How many questions are on the FPGEE?

NABP currently lists 200 questions for the FPGEE.

What is the current NAPLEX format?

NABP currently lists 225 questions delivered in a computerized fixed-form six-hour examination.

How many times can I take NAPLEX?

NABP currently states five total attempts, with a maximum of three attempts within a 12-month period, subject to applicable policies.

Can an Indian B.Pharm graduate take NAPLEX directly?

An international graduate should not assume direct NAPLEX eligibility. Foreign pharmacy graduates generally need to follow the applicable FPGEC pathway before the relevant state-licensure examination stage.

Does passing FPGEE mean I can practise in the USA?

No. FPGEE is part of the FPGEC certification pathway. It is not itself a pharmacist licence.

Do all U.S. states use exactly the same licensure process?

No. State boards establish jurisdiction-specific requirements, including eligibility and jurisprudence requirements.

Does PrepBuddy provide only NAPLEX preparation?

The platform is designed around a common pharmacy foundation that can support NAPLEX, FPGEE, PEBC, KAPS, Europe and Gulf licensing pathways, with the destination-specific layer kept separate.

Should I prepare for NAPLEX before FPGEE?

International candidates should first establish the applicable FPGEC pathway and administrative eligibility. The timing of NAPLEX preparation can then be planned around that pathway and the target state.
